MT Tree Farm System

              Work Plan For 2010


o Complete 100% of sample inspections by deadline established by    ATFS.
o Reduce backlog of Tree Farms that have not been inspected in the
    last five years.
o Inspect all Tree Farms due for 5-year re-inspection.
o Award scholarship(s) to at least one outstanding college student.
o Certify ten (10) new tree farms.
o Hold an annual meeting including a field trip to view forest    management practices and recognize outstanding tree farmers
    and inspectors.
o Recruit three new tree farm inspectors; retain 95% of current
    inspectors. Conduct an inspector training once new standard
   has been completed. Target recently retired industry foresters to
    become involved in the Tree Farm program.
o Publish a semi-annual newsletter on current forest related issues,
   one of which will    be a “Family Forest Edition” that is distributed
   to all Montana Forest Stewardship    graduates, Montana Forestland
    Owners Association members and Tree Farm    members
o Maintain the National Tree Farm data base.
o Prepare a program budget.
o Complete an annual internal audit of the financial records.
o Continue to distribute new member packets to new Tree Farmers.
o Send as many members to the National leadership workshop as
    budgets will allow.
o Develop a small grant request for the year 2011.
o Maintain two Tree Farm Forestry Ecosystem Learning Center sites.
o Maintain and update master list of Tree Farm Inspectors. Include
   certification    expiration date on their mailing label.
o Continue to update and improve Tree Farm display board and get
   it out for public display.
o Update website to become a clearing house of up to date information
    for private  landowners on forest management issues, insect and
    disease issues, and forest policy issues.
o Develop a grass roots network of landowners to become active in
    forest policy issues.
o Develop a member e-mail notification list that can be used to inform
    landowners of time sensitive issues and actions.
o Develop and maintain historical archives of the Montana Tree Farm
    program.
o Keep the Montana Tree Farm membership informed of issues at the
    national ATFS level.
o Continue the inspector incentive program.
o Support the Forest Mini-College and Master Forest Steward program
o Recruit at least 2 Tree Farmers as members of the Steering
   Committee.
o Publish an annual newsletter to our Tree Farm inspectors to better
   keep them    informed of Tree Farm issues.
o Maintain a Tree Farm record keeping system, including a folder for
   each tree farm with past inspection history and a copy of the
    management plan.
o Explore opportunities to improve forest products markets and
   utilization in conjunction with PEFC certification and any new
   Montana specific preference programs.
o Cooperate with MFOA on co-sponsored legislative listening session.
o Participate in Montana Forest Owners Association meetings.
o Participate in the State Technical Advisory Committee and local
   working groups.
o Participate in the Montana Forest Stewardship Council
o Participate in Montana forestland productivity tax working group.
